Session 20 - Non-state actors in action!

In modern times the interaction has increased among the states as well as the peoples of these states, i.e. people from one country interact with the people of other countries on the non-state level. Due to the development in the communication sector, the emergence of the worldwide web and the ease of access to different parts of the world people have started to interact more frequently with one another. When people travel economic transactions take place. These transactions are the very base of the unified economic system that exists in the world today. This system works in a way in which the economies of the states are dependent upon one another and the world acts as one big global market.
This phenomenon gives rise to the multinational companies that operate across the whole world and the world state system does not mean much to them as all the people of the world, no matter which state they belong to, are their potential consumers. They are satisfied as long as they make profits because making profit is the ultimate goal that these companies have. In the capitalist system that predominates almost all over the world now the power of the state is judged mostly by its economic prosperity. This gives a lot of power to these multinationals as they are the pillars on which the states’ economies are perched. This way they become the actors in the political game although they do not take part directly in the politics. They run the country from the back seat as they have massive influence over the state actors.
These multinationals are not the only non-state actors that exist today. Different multinational organizations i.e. NGOs and other pressure groups, for example the human rights activists and religious activists, are examples of some other non-state forces that affect the decisions the states make. The world state-system is still the basic framework of the world but due to increased globalization these non-state actors are becoming more and more powerful with each passing day.
