Session 6: Power "zero sum game"

In studying the concepts and theories of international relations, It is extremely important to understand the true nature power. Power lies at the base of all concepts and theories of IR, be it realism, idealism, structuralism or constructivism etc. And Power is unarguably a zero sum game. Hence in order to become powerful, one has to weaken the other. This concept lies at the root of all competition and struggle. Hence all forms of mutual cooperation, mutual upliftment and movements for progress and peace be any nation cannot be seen as mere voluntary act but rather driven by lust for power and global recognition.

Herz in his article talks about the concept of Realist liberalism. Although he talks about the amalgamation of the two rival theories, He does not offer it as a concrete alternative to the two but rather presents it as a novel theory. He is unable to touch the core concepts of power and the role of the nations with respect to it. His theory, although, touch upon the nature of human beings being selfish and crude and the need for better mutual cooperation and understanding among the nations but he fails to touch upon the nature power in relation to his theories and how different nations with unequal power structure can work towards mutual cooperation and understanding.

A nation holding a superior power status always holds the authority of calling the shots in matters of mutual understanding and be it the League of Nations or the United Nations, Powerful Nations are always given preference over the weaker. Many arguments can be given in favour of Nations which are given preference in matters of global  concern But it is power at the core which the reason behind their status. The prime example in this regard is that of the both the world wars where US stepped in the end to settle the issue by way of either force or negotiations. In order to bring a change in the present state of international relations, it is essential to evolve from the present state and nature power  and redefine the concept in a new light and this can only be possible if the present Superpower plays a instrumental role in this regard.

  1. I agree with your point where you state that powerful nations are given preference over the weaker, especially in terms of the United Nations. Even though other countries are part of this international organization, the security council basically dictates the workings of the body. The third world countries do not have much of a voice because their power cannot rival that of the other countries such as the United States

  2. But won't the superpower just use the system to advance its own interests? What will incentive a superpower to bring about change for the greater good?
