Session7 - Unmasking USA's Foreign Policy

The thought that the American foreign policy is based on “humanitarianism and pacifism” is nothing but ridiculous. Morgenthau argues fervently that the foreign policy is based on balance of power and I completely agree with his argument.

Since the last few years, the United States of America has undertaken the task to preach its views regarding world peace and its love for humanity. Its actions on the other hand are entirely opposite of what it actually preaches. All policies that are made and that have been undertaken by America are for its own selfish interests and for the maintenance of balance of power and its superiority.  Whether its been the invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan or the present day slowly creeping into Syria, America has always had its motives. Deception has trumped all other motives for the USA to carry out its foreign policy. The wars which are being fought over “humanitarian” reasons and as a bid to rid the world of “war and tyranny,” what is appalling is that the US itself is spreading nothing but war all over the world. This is a perfect dichotomy of what USA’s foreign policy is and how differently does it preach.

I believe that one of the major factors for USA’s foreign policy deception could be the rising threat of other countries such as China, gaining power and momentum in the international arena. It all comes down to national interest which the USA always protects unabashedly. It keeps conducting military operations in the sake for humanitarian interventions just to show the entire international system that it still is one of the major hegemonies in the system and it’s a mere show case of its military capabilities to the entire world. The base of all this, can be linked to Realism, as once again the US is just supporting the assumption that states are selfish institutes, all fighting for survival.

  1. I completely agree with Hamza that countries like America take certain decisions and steps only to show that they still hold power and there is no other motive. Secondly, they are scared of the fact that another country is developing and they might over power them so they take certain measures to counter that.

  2. Well argued piece. I like how you highlight the U.S.'s sanctimonious policies. Hence realism can be used to accurately interpret U.S. foreign policy.
