Session 6: Where are we heading to?

“Whenever such anarchic society has existed –and it has existed in most periods of known history on some level- there has arisen what may be called the “security dilemma”. Herz goes on to say that the reason of chaos we see in the world is because of the struggle for power by groups or individuals that they undertake because of fear of impedance of their freedoms by the other. Now let us assume that such an anarchic society exists where internal strife and power struggle has not yet taken birth. Now let us suppose that all those in this society constitute humanity. Is it then possible that out of sheer boredom or a lack of purpose man turned on against each other? The different schools of thought try to explain the way humans interact or ought to, but should it not be that a unified goal or purpose of man should be figured out in the first place. One could say in response to this that this task has been given to the philosophers and that it is more of an existentialist dilemma. Hence, focusing on the current task at hand becomes justified i.e. figuring out the way society and individuals interact, which justifies the realist vs idealist debate. This however should not lead the debate of purpose of existence or a unified goal from going out of the scene. If the ultimate purpose seems too subjective and not enough of a reason to bind the dividing society then at least a common goal ought to be agreed upon, upon which then all of the members of the human society or mankind might act towards. If nothing else this goal or purpose will at least make sure humanity is doing something as a whole. Instead, of aimless self-centered power struggle which would weaken man as a whole a certain state of existence or plan should be proposed upon which all the individuals and groups would act upon. This would ensure that humanity is doing something or moving towards something as a whole instead of stifling itself.

  1. Please use paragraphs. Also, what do you propose humanity come together and reach as an overarching goal? World peace? If so, is it achievable through a realist liberal view? What mechanisms could be put in place to bring it about?
