Session 21: Re-defining Feminism

Feminism is the struggle for regaining the lost respect. Respect given to women by all religions of the world. Of course, it also refers to a struggle for equality. Women have been treated merely as a source of men's pleasure and satisfaction for a long time in history. But at the same time, some movements some movements are misusing the term feminism. In recent weeks, an Indian actress acted in a video which suffered a backlash even by proponents of feminism. Video was about the empowerment of women or more specifically actress was seen saying some strong comments about the choices women have to made.

Two and a half minutes video features images of about 99 women from different spheres of life and actress voice asks people to accept that its women choice to have sex before marriage or not, to come home early or late at night and some other arguments.

This is not equality or even empowerment. It's just a responsive action to the male dominance in society. It gives a narrow definition of feminism. Feminism is about the struggle of equality. This kind of attitude leads the society to social chaos. A society that will have no concept revolving around a family structure. Feminism is about the women who demands equal leadership opportunity at the work place. It’s about making people realize that women are capable of working at same potential as that of men.

Sometimes, I just wonder that use of terms like feminism and oppression on women have been so excessively used that it has lost its impact. People just kind of only waive at them. For me, women needs to demonstrate their potential in every aspect of life and they have been doing it consistently in the past and as a result people are realizing that women are capable of doing jobs which were considered suitable for man only. It’s just a matter of time. Women situation have bettered significantly and since success can't be attained overnight, its just a matter of time when women will not be seen as an inferior gender.

  1. I don't think its necessarily because it is overused. I think feminism means different things to different people which is fine but it also creates divide.

  2. About its being overused, its just a thought of me. About division it creates, I think that is undermining the purpose of feminism. There is need of a consensus about what feminism is and when you have a clear cut objective in front of you, its easier to work hard for it.
