Session 21 - It's time to catch up!

Throughout history, as it has been the case, women have always been marginalized in almost every sphere of life. The house has been the realm of the woman for most part of the history. More recently women have begun to realize that their extent is not limited to their houses, so now we see them challenging the patriarchal system that the men had formed to dominate them. The have started to question their role in the society and we see them competing with men for the roles that were previously thought to be for men only.

Just like all the other disciplines International Relations was also marred by this patriarchal thought that this discipline is the domain of men and women are not fit to carry out the tasks needed to be carried out in the international arena. The general perception, that women are overwhelmed by emotions which renders their decisions much less credible, is formulated by the patriarchal society to minimize the role of women in international politics. For years women have been made to think this way too but in recent years we have seen women challenging the norms and creating new ones themselves. An example of this is women becoming the heads of states and ruling over men. Though there are only few examples of this but it is a start and the first step is always considered to be the hardest. And in my opinion if women actually have that soft emotional side to them, then it might prove useful in spreading the peace, which the unemotional and ruthless side of men has not been able to do so yet.

There is still a long way to go before this patriarchal society is balanced out, with the power divided equally between men and women, but let us keep our hopes high as the process of balancing out has already started.
