Clash of civilizations

Clash of civilizations written by Samuel P. Huntington was published in the summers of 1993 when the cold war era had just ended. The political scientists of that time were speculating the future shape of the international politics according to the situations of that time. Samuel P .Huntington's article attained a quite enormous amount of attention because of the sensitivity of the topic and the controversial content that it contained.
His speculations were so invigorating that it resulted in quite forceful response from the people and the scholars who were of different view. The basic point of his prediction which I disagree with is:
he bases his argument on the concept of civilizations and says that there would be seven or eight distinct civilizations in the world who would be competing for the resources and would have constant clash with each other. And these civilizations would be formed on the bases of distinct culture e.g. the west and the Arabs etc. the fact that with the advent of advancement of communication technology, these cultural differences have diffused to a greater degree and basic values such as equality, kindness and respect etc are shared by people around the world belonging to different religions and cultures. this might have been true in the past when people from different kingdoms or states did not know each other well enough and considered themselves as nobles and the their opponents as "barbarians". but today in this time and age no such civilization is present which has remained untouched by the influence of other societies. And people of the world share a global culture now where every one wants to go to "McDonald's".
There might be some groups who segregate themselves and get involved in belligerent activities on the basis of religion, culture or territory, but they can not be considered as representatives of the whole civilization.

  1. You raise good points, though I wish you had structured your piece a bit more to demonstrate a clear line of argument in your piece. That being said, Huntington's Clash of Civilizations argument is facile at best and I agree that arguing in favor of the existence of particular "civilizations" in a globalized world makes little sense.
