Session 14: A review

During this course, the most interesting thing that one learned is that IR is a field that cares a lot about its theoretical understanding of real events. Even war is discussed so much from various perspectives. Scholars engage in debates that are quite useful to determine the implications of policy-making stuff for the national governments. States are unitary actors, one always understood that way, but recognized that states are mere abstractions and it is the institutions and individuals in the state apparatus that run the state affairs.

States are rational. Only the behavior of Germany in WWI suggested the opposite where they pursued war, because they thought that their territorial survival is only possible if they could bear the maximum power in the region and belittled the perceptions and policies of France and Russia. Moreover, It is learned that the system in which we live in is anarchic but anarchy does not mean that states behave in chaotic or disorganized manner.

Moreover, balance of power an extremely important theme where states pursue to gain highest positions in the distribution capabilities among other states. In this way, system may become uni-polar, bi-polar or multi-polar. The most amazing thing about this course is the ability of the instructor to convey his knowledge in a cordial and friendly manner, and it contributed to huge shift in one's understanding of the IR theory. Lastly, the course is a useful guide in giving on understanding of relating theory to practice. Because, in real world events one's intellectual status is only possible when one can debate over issues systematically and thoughtfully. Without this skill set, one' image as a political scientist cannot be established.

  1. Well thank you Ali for the kind compliment and I actually think that you do a fantastic job summarizing some of the key points that we have discussed. Although I think there is more room for debate on whether or not states are, in fact, rational actors, I think you generally provided good information and support your perspectives. Good job - I'm looking forward to seeing what you will produce in the future!
